Hi Future Family!

My name is Beckham, or Becks for short. I’m all playful boy puppy! I love toys, especially squeaky ones. I love to run in the yard. I love to play with other dogs. I love all kinds of people. I do have some problems seeing. Right now, I can see shadows and movement pretty well and do great around the house and in the yard. I have what’s called Juvenile Hereditary Cataracts, which basically means I got cataracts in my eyes really young.

JHC is a disease that can be prevented when responsible breeders have mom and dad dogs screened for JHC and don’t breed parents that are carriers. Unfortunately, the person who bred me was looking to make some quick cash and now I will go blind young.

I’m going to go see a specialist at UGA about my eyes and see if I am a good candidate for cataract surgery. It is risky though, I could lose my vision even sooner or develop painful glaucoma. My new foster moms say that depending on what the doctor says, I’ll either have surgery or I’ll learn to play without vision just like my foster brother Fred.

Here’s the rule though if you’re thinking you might be my family, no pity parties. I’m not sad, this is just how I was born. I don’t even know that other dogs can do anything different than me and I can learn to do just about anything no matter what!

My forever family needs to make a commitment to attend a minimum of 6 weeks training with me using a certified trainer so we can really bond. Plus having a trainer that knows me can help make plans for continuing my training even if I lose all vision. I heard about another blind dog, Buster Peeps, who even does scent work and can find treats in a brand new giant room just using his nose! I bet I would like that too!
