Pedo arrived to us in January 2016 after the passing of his human. A family friend was able to take Pedo in, care for him, and have his vetting updated while she looked for a more permanent home for him.

When Pedo arrived to us, the first thing we noticed were his feet. All 4 of his “wrist” or “ankle” bones seemed to sit at right angles and touch the ground. His vet records suggested “collapsed carpi”. Further reading his records showed a suspicion of heart failure as well. So, off to Main Street Vet we went. Senior blood work, x-rays of his chest, and of his feet. His blood work came back really great for a senior guy so we could relax there. The feet x-rays confirmed the “collapsed carpi”, but there’s not much we can do there. Surgical options or braces may have been a possibility as a young dog as Dr. Esther believes it is congenital, but at this point it wouldn’t be worth surgery and braces would be more painful than helpful. They don’t seem to bother him at all and get along fine with his adorable “flipper feet” so we’re just going to let him be.

The chest x-rays revealed heart failure. Pedo has an enlarged “fluidy” & flaccid heart. His heart has to work very hard to pump and is losing muscle tone. Pedo has started heart medications and so far is doing great. Many dogs do great on medications and are given months or years.

Pedo is a Forever Foster in our Senior Sweethearts Program which places senior dogs into permanent foster placements. This program allows the dogs to live with a family being loved as their very own, while the Rescue Ranch continues to cover all medical costs for the life of the dog. Only through donations & sponsorship are we able to help these senior & medically needy dogs.  Pedo’s medication runs about $35/month and he would love to find a sponsor!
